Onboard Carbon Capture
Decarbonizing maritime operations is no longer optional - it's essential. As the maritime industry moves toward stricter emissions targets, onboard carbon capture systems (CCS) emerge as a powerful solution to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions directly from vessels.
DESMI supports maritime decarbonization by providing robust and efficient pumping solutions specifically engineered for onboard CCS applications. From solvent circulation to CO₂ transfer and storage, our pumps ensure reliable, efficient, and sustainable operations at sea.
Meeting IMO CO₂ regulations
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set clear targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. To reach these targets, innovative technologies like onboard carbon capture are becoming increasingly important.
By adopting carbon capture onboard ships, owners gain a direct solution for meeting current and future IMO regulations. Capturing CO₂ directly from exhaust gases reduces the vessel’s carbon footprint and supports compliance with EEDI, EEXI, and CII requirements.
DESMI pumps in the CCS process
An onboard carbon capture and storage system typically relies on an amine-based absorption process to separate CO₂ from exhaust gases. Pumps are integrated into key stages such as flue gas cooling, solvent circulation, and rich and lean solvent transfer between absorber and stripper, as well as cooling and heat exchange for energy recovery.
After compression and liquefaction, the captured CO₂ is transferred to onboard storage. In these systems, pumps must be designed to handle chemically aggressive solvents, fluctuating conditions, and continuous duty cycles to ensure reliable operation at sea.
Seal options for demanding onboard conditions
Sealing reliability is a key factor in the performance of any onboard carbon capture system. Conditions at sea add further complexity - limited space, continuous system operation, and chemically aggressive media all place high demands on equipment.
To match these challenges, DESMI offers a selection of sealing technologies that align with your system design, safety standards, and maintenance preferences. Whether you need simplicity, redundancy, or zero-leakage performance, we have a solution that fits.
Each option is supported by our marine experience and application know-how, helping ensure your CCS system runs safely and smoothly over time.
Built on proven maritime experience
DESMI’s deep roots in the maritime industry make us a reliable partner for emerging onboard carbon capture systems. Our experience includes more than 5,000 pump installations in exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers), where fluid handling challenges - such as chemical compatibility, fluctuating loads, and continuous operation - mirror those found in carbon capture.
In addition to scrubber systems, our marine portfolio covers engine room pumps, cargo handling systems, ballast water management, and energy-saving technologies like OptiSave™. These applications have equipped us with a strong understanding of shipboard integration, performance expectations, and service requirements at sea.
This foundation enables us to deliver carbon capture pumping solutions that are not only technically sound, but also aligned with the operational realities of life onboard.

Ready for rising demand
As the maritime industry moves from pilot projects to large-scale adoption of onboard carbon capture and storage systems, the ability to deliver at scale becomes essential. With global manufacturing reach, engineering capacity, and flexible production setups, DESMI supports shipowners and system integrators in implementing CCS solutions across entire fleets.
Global manufacturing and supply chain
DESMI operates production facilities in Denmark, China, India, and the United States, supported by a strong international supply chain and logistics network. This global footprint allows us to serve shipyards, system integrators, and vessel owners efficiently - no matter where their operations are based.
From casting and machining to assembly and testing, our manufacturing sites are equipped to deliver high-volume production with consistent quality control. For shipowners operating internationally, our global presence ensures faster delivery times, reliable spare part access, and responsive technical support from local DESMI teams and partners.
In addition, our long-standing relationships with OEMs, engineering firms, and classification societies allow us to navigate documentation, certification, and compliance requirements seamlessly - reducing project delays and simplifying procurement.
Flexible production capabilities
Marine CCS installations can vary significantly depending on vessel type, available space, and integration complexity. That’s why DESMI offers a high degree of flexibility in pump configuration, material selection, and system design.
Whether you’re equipping a single vessel with a compact CCS system or planning a fleet-wide rollout, we can scale our offering accordingly. This includes standardized pump models for repeatable use, as well as custom-engineered skids and modules for more complex layouts.
Our teams work closely with customers to align performance, footprint, and interface requirements with the specific demands of each project - helping ensure a smoother path from design to installation and operation.
With DESMI, you get a partner that not only keeps up with demand, but one that’s ready to support your long-term decarbonization strategy - ship by ship.
