Minimum Total Harmonic Distortion on board Scandlines’ New Hybrid Ferries

Minimum Total Harmonic Distortion on board Scandlines’ New Hybrid Ferries

In 2016, Scandlines inaugurated two new hybrid ferries for the Rostock-Gedser route. In order to improve the power quality, Scandlines installed active filters on board M/V Berlin and M/V Copenhagen.

Before commissioning, Scandlines’ new hybrid ferries had a power quality of THDV 15%. In order for the ferries to go into operation, the power quality had to be reduced to below 8 percent THDV (Total Harmonic Distortion Voltage).

By installing Schneider Electric Accusine (OptiPower), Scandlines achieved a power quality below 3 percent resulting in minimum THDV (Total Harmonic Distortion Voltage).

Superintendent Christian Thiemer at Scandlines says: “We are very satisfied with the installation of OptiPower on board our two new hybrid ferries.

We always aim for energy efficient solutions which not only have a low impact on the environment, but at the same time reduce costs.

After the installation of OptiPower and the active filters, we have removed a total load of 400A on the generators which results in a total saving of 170-200 kW on each ferry".

DESMI has managed the entire project from dimensioning to design and installation and the complete installation has taken approx. 5-8 days.
