Pump health check - Defense Service
What is a Pump Health Check?
A Pump Health Check is a systematic inspection of your vessel's pump installation, providing a clear assessment of the condition and performance of each pump. The service covers both DESMI pumps and third-party pumps originally supplied by DESMI as part of the overall system.
The purpose is to identify wear, defects and potential risks before they develop into costly failures, unplanned downtime or operational disruptions. By taking a proactive approach, vessel operators can improve reliability, optimize maintenance planning and reduce the risk of unexpected breakdowns.
During the inspection, our service engineers assess critical components and operating conditions, including:
- Signs of leakage, corrosion, wear and missing components
- Common but often overlooked issues such as faulty pressure gauges, insufficient lubrication and blocked bearing drain holes
- Pump shaft rotation to detect early signs of bearing damage or seized pumps
- Couplings, foundations, seals and other critical mechanical components
- Vibration measurements where operating conditions allow
Why Choose a Pump Health Check?
For naval and defense operators, operational readiness depends on the reliability of critical onboard systems. Pumps supporting firefighting, cooling water, ballast and other essential functions must perform when needed, especially during deployment and operations at sea.
A Pump Health Check provides the insight needed to prioritize maintenance activities, allocate resources effectively and make informed decisions based on documented equipment condition rather than assumptions.
The result is reduced operational risk, better maintenance planning and greater confidence in the performance of your vessel's pump systems. Below, you can take a closer look at the key benefits and insights provided through a Pump Health Check.
|
Individual reports for each pumpEach pump gets its own report with a unique ID, making it easy to identify and follow up on. |
Minimized downtimeEarly detection and proactive planning keep your pumps running and your operations on track. |
Clear status overviewGet a quick indication of the current condition of each pump. |
|
Risk assessmentEach pump is assessed for risk by our engineer as part of the inspection.
|
Documentation & historyPrevious reports can be kept, so you can track work done and see developments over time |
Maintenance planningThe results help identify potential maintenance or repair needs before they become costly problems.
|
|
Vibration measurement (where applicable)Additional screening tests help identify potential issues at an early stage.
|
Better performanceWell-maintained pumps operate more efficiently, saving time and money in the long run. |
The service is especially beneficial when:
- Multiple pumps are installed across the vessel, making it difficult to monitor their condition individually
- Maintenance is primarily reactive rather than preventive
- The condition of standby pumps or other critical systems is uncertain
- The vessel is preparing for deployment, extended operations or a scheduled dry-docking period

A Pump Health Check may be less relevant when only a small number of DESMI pumps are installed or when the pumps have recently undergone a comprehensive overhaul or specialist inspection.
Compared to a full pump overhaul, a Pump Health Check offers a faster and more cost-effective way to identify which pumps require attention. Rather than committing resources to dismantling and servicing every pump, maintenance efforts can be focused on the equipment where the risk and need are greatest, with further support available through DESMI's Navy Pumps Service.
