AquaShield UV Control Software: Built for Simpler, Smarter Aquaculture UV Treatment
June 2026
When DESMI began developing the AquaShield UV Control Software for aquaculture UV systems, the ambition was clear: create one intelligent software platform that could operate across the full Aquaculture UV range, including both AS and AD systems.
The goal was not only to standardize the control platform, but also to make commissioning, operation and customer integration significantly easier.
The software was designed so a commissioning engineer can configure the system on site without requiring direct support from the automation team, reducing complexity and making project execution more efficient.

Built on proven UV control experience
The development started from a strong foundation. DESMI already had extensive experience from BWMS software, but aquaculture brought a different set of expectations. In aquaculture, operators need fast overview, clear status information and simple day-to-day operation.
Therefore, the HMI was redesigned with a more user-focused layout: fewer buttons, a simpler overview and the key operational values visible where the operator needs them. The main HMI screen presents core data such as dose setpoint, actual dose, UV intensity, UV transmission, flow, pressure, temperature, lamp power and system status in one operational view.
This reflects DESMI’s innovation approach: not innovation for the sake of adding features, but innovation focused on making advanced UV treatment easier, safer and more reliable for the customer.
The software continuously manages the relationship between UV dose, flow, UV intensity and lamp power. Depending on the operator’s chosen UV dose and the water’s UV-Transmission, the AquaShield unit can optimize energy consumption by dimming the lamps to reach the requested UV-dose setpoint. This allows the system to deliver carefully dosed UV treatment while supporting efficient power use.
Built-in compliance and easy system integration
A key customer expectation in aquaculture is documented and reliable compliance. The software has therefore been developed with NVI requirements built into the control philosophy.
Even if an operator accidentally enters a dose setpoint that would otherwise take the system outside compliance, the system will not regulate below the minimum NVI requirement. In other words, compliance is not left solely to the operator; it is supported by the software logic itself.
Another important part of the development was integration. Aquaculture sites often already have their own site control systems, and customers expect equipment to fit into their existing operational setup.
AquaShield was therefore designed to integrate easily with the customer’s Site Control System, allowing the UV units to be monitored and controlled through the customer’s own interface. The manual also describes how the UV system can exchange start, run and flow-related signals with the site control system through analog signals or digital communication.

The result is a software platform that combines DESMI’s proven UV control experience with a purpose-built aquaculture interface. It supports simpler commissioning, easier operation, customer control system integration, energy-conscious dose regulation and built-in compliance logic.
AquaShield is therefore more than a control system — it is a customer-driven software development created to make advanced UV treatment practical, reliable and easy to operate in modern aquaculture installations.
The AquaShield UV Control Software is also a strong example of the specialist knowledge and dedication within our automation engineering team. Developing a control platform that is simple for operators, robust in daily operation, ready for customer site integration and built around compliance requirements takes more than programming skills — it requires deep process understanding, practical field experience and the ability to translate customer needs into reliable software functions.
Our engineers have combined experience from advanced UV control systems with a clear understanding of the aquaculture environment, creating a solution that makes complex treatment logic easy to operate. Their work has turned technical know-how into real customer value: easier commissioning, intuitive operation, efficient dose regulation and a software platform that supports dependable performance in the field.
This development is something we can be proud of. It reflects the skill, curiosity and commitment of a team that not only understands automation, but understands how to make automation work better for the people who depend on it every day.
