Oil Spill Training in Mauritius

December 2015

The DESMI training seminar was held in the beginning of December and featured live demonstrations with DESMI Oil Spill equipment.

The purpose of the training seminar was to bring industry stakeholders together in an effort to prepare for future oil spill incidents. Besides improving the operational capacity of the regional players, the seminar sought to strengthen the relationship with the Mauritius Port Authority.

The two-day seminar involved product presentations and demonstrations - Day one entitled ‘RO FENCE Boom Assembly' focusing on the benefits of using DESMI Equipment, Boom Types & Selection, Deployment & Recovery Configurations and Consultation on the current challenges.

Day two had a dedicated focus on Equipment Demonstrations with DESMI representatives Erik Refsgaard from the office in Denmark and Mike Shauri from DESMI Africa. These demonstrations included the following:

  • ‘Run through’ of each piece of equipment, identifying technical detail against specification sheet
  • Start up and elaboration of the use of power packs
  • Connecting system hose to DBD skimmer
  • Deploying and retrieving the RO FENCE boom
  • Shutdown procedures
  • After operation care

Important educational training can be vital when acting on dangerous oil spill situations and DESMI strives to spread the knowledge with training seminars thereby creating experts and oil spill ambassadors around the world.
