Pump solutions for Skagen Salmon’s RAS facility
For one of Denmark’s most ambitious land-based aquaculture projects, Skagen Salmon required reliable pumping solutions for a large-scale RAS facility. DESMI supplied pumps for multiple process areas across the site, supporting the flow-critical operations needed for daily production.
The challenge
Designing and operating a large-scale RAS facility places high demands on water movement and system stability. Every part of production depends on continuous circulation and tightly controlled conditions, and even short interruptions can affect the biological balance of the system.
For Skagen Salmon, the challenge was to establish a pumping setup that could support uninterrupted operation across a complex and expanding facility. The solution had to handle large water volumes, operate reliably under demanding conditions, and support multiple process steps throughout the RAS loop.
Meeting these requirements was critical to ensuring stable daily operation and creating a robust foundation for long-term production.

Why Skagen Salmon chose DESMI
Skagen Salmon required a pump supplier with proven experience in land-based aquaculture and the ability to support a complex RAS facility. DESMI was selected due to its broad aquaculture pump portfolio and long-standing involvement in pumping solutions for fish farming applications.
By sourcing pumps for multiple process areas from a single supplier, Skagen Salmon achieved consistency in technology, materials, and service approach across the facility. This simplified integration and ensured a uniform pumping standard throughout the project.
DESMI’s experience within aquaculture, combined with application-focused pump solutions, made the company a suitable partner for a large-scale and phased land-based production facility.
The solution
To support Skagen Salmon’s RAS facility, DESMI delivered a wide range of pumps installed across key water processes throughout the site. The delivery covers multiple stages of production and includes pumps installed in the hatchery, pre-growout, growout, and processing areas.
The installation spans nearly the full DESMI aquaculture pump portfolio, including NSL, DSL, ESL, NSLH, ESLH, SA, multistage, and submerged pumps. In total, more than 150 pumps were supplied, enabling consistent pumping technology across the facility.
The pumps are used for essential RAS applications such as water intake, main circulation, UV loops, heating and cooling circuits, glycol circulation, oxygen injection, drum filter flow, CIP systems, and sludge handling. This wide application coverage ensures reliable water movement throughout the entire RAS loop.

A key part of the delivery was the NSLH500/500-A02, a high-flow, low-pressure pump designed specifically for aquaculture. Twenty-four units were supplied, each configured for saltwater operation with a ceramic-coated pump housing and a super duplex impeller. The pumps were dimensioned for a nominal duty point of 2,000 m³/h per unit, providing the capacity required for the growout area.
With a broad product range and application-specific configurations, the solution supports stable water flow across the facility and provides a robust pumping foundation for ongoing operation.
