Frequently Asked Questions

What is AquaCulture/Fish Farming?

AquaCulture or Fish Farming is breeding, raising, and harvesting fish or shellfish in fresh and salt water. Basically, it’s the act of farming fish in controlled environments in water, either offshore or on land.

What are the main challenges for pumps in AquaCulture?

This is a very difficult question to answer as there are many aspects affecting pumps in AquaCulture. The most important factors to pump lifetime start from correctly selecting the pumps. As much information as possible about the application is necessary. Dialogue right from the very start of the RAS design phase is essential and DESMI are always happy to assist. Our sales engineers have a lot of experience in pumping applications. We firmly believe in cooperating with all parties involved from consultant engineers to the fish farmer.

What types of DESMI pumps are used in AquaCulture?

DESMI manufacture several different pump types. For RAS Aquaculture a large range of centrifugal pumps are used. Horizontal and vertical end suction pumps ensure installation flexibility, vertical inline centrifugal pumps are often used to optimise flow with the added benefit of saving floor space due to the small footprint. For higher pressure applications such rinsing drum filters then multi-stage centrifugal pumps can be used. A large number of self-priming pumps are used throughout the RAS for, e.g. emptying fixed bed biofilters.

How does UV disinfection work? And is it needed?

UV disinfection is a process that utilizes ultraviolet light to deactivate or destroy microorganisms, disrupting their DNA and preventing them from reproducing. Commonly applied in water treatment and air purification systems, UV disinfection is an effective method for eliminating bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Its non-chemical nature makes it environmentally friendly and widely used for sterilization purposes. In AquaCulture, UV filters and mechanical filters serve distinct roles. UV filters use ultraviolet light to neutralize harmful microorganisms in the water, preventing diseases and promoting a healthier environment for aquatic life. On the other hand, mechanical filters physically trap debris and particulate matter, enhancing water clarity by removing visible impurities. While UV filters target pathogens, mechanical filters focus on the mechanical removal of solid waste, collectively contributing to water quality maintenance in AquaCulture systems.

What UV dose do I need in a Fish Farm?

The UV dose required for the safety of your fish stock will depend on the pathogens you need to remove. This can also depend on the application design, from intake, to RAS, well boats or wastewater. Furthermore, UV doses are usually measured in [mJ/cm²] and can be presented as Absolute Minimum Dose, Average Dose or Reduction Equivalent Dose (RED).
