The speed of a vessel is measured over the ground or through the water. For boom deployment only speed through water is of interest.

A slow going diesel driven propeller on a vessel can pull approx 10 kp per 1 bhp. Ensure that the vessel used for towing a boom formation is able to sail with slow speed (0.7 knots).

1 ft: 30.48 cm
1 metre: 3.28 ft
1 kg: 2.2 lbs
1 kp: 9.82N

When oil is drifting on the water the current will act 100% and the wind 3%.

Heavy oil with a viscosity close to 1.0 t/m³ may sink and drift below water surface when the temperature is close to 0°C.
