Weir Skimmers are simple and very reliable constructions. The principle is the weir lip position at the interface between the oil and water. The recovery rate of the skimmer is high and the weight and volume is rather low compared to the capacity of the skimmer. The major disadvantage of the weir skimmer is the recovery efficiency. When used in wave conditions the amount of water recovered will be relatively high, but in more calm conditions is it a very useful skimmer type.
Oleophilic Skimmers can be divided into following groups:
- Disc Skimmers
- Mop Rope Skimmers (vertical and horizontal)
- Brush Skimmers
- Drum Skimmers
The principle is that oil will stick to the surface of the skimmer head and water will not.
Disc Skimmers are extremely efficient in oil with lower viscosities. The recovery efficiency is very high, often more than 95%. Ro-Clean Desmi is producing Disc Skimmers with capacities between 1 – 140 m³/h.

Mop Rope Skimmers are skimmers where a Mop Rope is towed through the oil slick. The horizontal type (Ro-Mop Skimmers) is very useful in harbours, lakes and in industry, as well as onshore spills. The recovery efficiency is again very high and often more than 95%. The skimmer has capacities between 6 – 18 m³/h.
The vertical models, Sea-Mops, are used from a vessel hanging on a crane. There are models with capacities from approx. 15 – 70 m³/h. In general this type of skimmer is very efficient in lower viscosity oil. Further, the skimmer is very useful in areas with a lot of debris as the ropes are lifted from the water surface when going into the rollers squeezing off the oil and during the lifting of the ropes the debris will fall off.

Brush Skimmers are produced in many different types and forms. RO-CLEAN DESMI has developed a circular skimmer called HELIX which can recover oil in a 360° circle. Further, RO-CLEAN DESMI has Brush Drums and Brush Belts. Brush Skimmers have in general relatively good recovery efficiency and also cover a rather large viscosity range.

Drum Skimmers: As a unique feature RO-CLEAN DESMI has developed a so-called DBD Skimmer type. The same skimmer body can be used both as Disc, Brush and Drum Skimmer. The characteristics of a Drum Skimmer are very similar to Disc Skimmers.

Vacuum Skimmers: For many years RO-CLEAN DESMI has sold the well proven Ro-Vac. It is an extremely powerful vacuum unit with a recovery capacity of more than 50 m³/h. The Skimmer unit has a full accessory package including vacuum heads, vacuum tanks in various sizes and also the Ro-Vac Skimmer can be directly connected to the DESMI Mini-Max for giving an efficient recovery of oil on water. As an onshore skimmer the Ro-Vac is state-of-the-art.

Belt Skimmers are a relatively new RO-CLEAN DESMI concept. It was developed are a result of experiences from Prestige and Baltic Carrier Oil Spills. It has been used in oil spills where the viscosity of the oil was higher than cSt 300,000. It performed extremely well and is the only skimmer type, together with the unique DESMI DOP Pump, which can really handle such types of oils. In order to offer the customers very versatile skimmer systems the Belt Skimmer is a Cassette which can be easily mounted on a DESMI Terminator Skimmer. By this way the client only needs one pump for having two concepts!!
