Skimmer Systems

When using skimmers there are three important factors:

-          Nameplate capacity
-          Recovery rate
-          Recovery efficiency

Nameplate capacity of a skimmer/pump is the capacity in m³/h stated by the manufacturer. It should be noted that this is under optimum conditions.

Recovery rate is the rate at which pure oil is being recovered in m³/h.

Recovery efficiency is the percentage of oil recovered in the total amount of recovered mixture.

A fourth expression is the throughput efficiency. The throughput efficiency is the percentage of oil recovered in relation to the amount of which has been encountered in the boom formation. This factor is not specifically related to the skimmer. Also it is difficult to estimate the exact amount of oil being encountered.

The heart of a skimmer is the pump. Especially when the oil is very viscous the pump is the keystone. So far no pump has reached the quality of the DESMI DOP Pumps. The DESMI DOP pump range is from 30 – 125 m³/h capacity. The pumps have been tested positively in oil with viscosities higher than cSt. 1.000.000. In all comparable tests DOP pumps have always performed better than other pumps.

As the pumps can handle oil with viscosities higher than cSt. 1.000.000 it is essential that the oil can overcome the friction loss in the discharge hoses. RO-CLEAN DESMI was the first manufacturer of Oil Spill Recovery Equipment to introduce the water injection at the pump outlet. It has shown remarkable results in reducing the friction loss in hoses and allows pumping extremely viscous oil in 6” hoses.
